Oh the Wonder-ful Wonder Wheel!
One summer destination to add to your “Must See” list is Coney Island Park in Brooklyn, New York. More importantly, a “Must Do” is to take a ride on their World Famous Wonder Wheel! I visited for the first time with my NYC roommate and my son, when he was a young boy, many summers ago. It feels like yesterday when we experienced the dramatic swinging motion of the Wonder Wheel’s red & blue car as it lifted us up high ~ and swung us back and forth ~ with squeals of delight & wonder!
It is the only “eccentric” Ferris Wheel of its kind in the world. Invented by Charles Hermann, and built in 1920 by the Eccentric Ferris Wheel company, this marvel weighs 200 tons, constructed of 100% Bethlehem steel forged right on Coney Island Beach. It features 16 red & blue swinging cars and 8 white stationary cars. The swinging cars slide on a serpentine track towards the hub of the Wheel, and as the Wheel turns they slide towards the circumference!
The Wonder Wheel now boasts over 40 million riders who experience views from 150 feet high of Manhattan’s skyline. In 1989 it was designated an official New York City landmark and in 2020 it celebrated its 100th Anniversary.
